Description: The Ghana Nutrition Improvement Project (GNIP), initiated by the Ajinomoto Group in 2009 and later transferred to The Ajinomoto Foundation in 2017, aims to combat childhood malnutrition through the development of KOKO Plus, an affordable nutritional supplement for traditional Ghanaian porridge (koko). KOKO Plus, which enhances the nutrient profile of koko by adding essential vitamins and minerals, was verified by the World Food Programme as a nutritious food option. The project operates on a social business model that collaborates with various stakeholders, including the Ghana Health Service, local businesses, and international NGOs, to ensure accessibility and affordability at approximately $0.10 per sachet. GNIP targets to reach 300,000 weaning-age children by 2023 and has already benefited thousands since its inception. Challenges include distribution in rural areas and achieving profitability; however, the project emphasizes behavior change among caregivers through community health education. The initiative reflects a commitment to sustainable nutrition solutions tailored to local needs, supported by research partnerships with institutions like the University of Ghana and Tufts University.
